first_imgManchester Pacific Gateway Project breaks ground after 12-year battle Show Caption Hide Caption Show Caption Hide Caption SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — It was a 12-year battle that reached the United States Supreme Court: The battle to build the biggest waterfront development on the West Coast.But Friday, it officially became a reality.Papa Doug Manchester stood alongside Mayor Kevin Faulconer and others to commemorate the start of a new future for downtown San Diego.Related Story: Special Report: Broadway Navy Project is cleared to move forward“This will be the biggest dig in the history of San Diego. Seven city blocks going down at one time and about 800,000 cubic yards of dirt in the first phase of the project,” said Project Manager Perry Dealy.The area of downtown is along Harbor Drive across from the Midway Aircraft Carrier. Dealy said this will open up access to the waterfront.Seven blocks will be verticle developments with five buildings. There will be two hotels, a 29-story Convention Center hotel, a smaller five-star boutique hotel and two office buildings. It will also include a 1.9-acre park and a pedestrian paseo.And there will be two levels of underground parking with 3,000 public spaces.The actual construction won’t begin until August after the demolition of the old buildings is completed, but they anticipate completion in early 2021.
