Kohli was rested for the last two ODIs and the upcoming T20I series, starting February 6.India are expected to make a couple of changes to the match-winning XI from the third ODI as MS Dhoni is unlikely to return for the Hamilton tie. The India wicketkeeper-batsman had missed the third ODI in Mount Maunganui with a sore hamstring.Dhoni was spotted training in Hamilton on Wednesday but the team management is opting for a cautious approach and wants him to completely recover from the injury ahead of a hectic limited-overs season, India Today has learnt.Dhoni was in fine form in India’s historic 2-1 win over Australia as he hit three back-to-back half-centuries and won the Man of the Series award. In the only innings (second ODI in Mount Maunganui) he has played in New Zealand, Dhoni made a 33-ball unbeaten 48.In Dhoni’s absence, Dinesh Karthik will continue the wicket-keeping duties and Shubman Gill comes into the XI as a top-order batsman. It remains to be seen where Gill will bat on Thursday as Ambati Rayudu may get a promotion to No. 3 spot.advertisementShubman Gill was one of the stars of India’s U-19 World Cup win in 2018. The young Punjab batsman has gone on to impress at the domestic level and A tours. He scored 728 runs, including a classy double ton, from five matches at an average of 104.00 in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 season.Speaking to India Today, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar insisted Shubman Gill get opportunities in New Zealand.”Well because the No.3 spot is vacant, I would want to give Shubman Gill a game, give him a couple of games and see how he fares. If he gets to bat, you will get a fair idea how he is taking to international cricket,” Gavaskar said.Captain Virat Kohli had also heaped praise on Shubman Gill while talking up the rich assembly line of youngsters waiting for their opportunities in the senior national team.”I think there are some outstanding talents. We saw Prithvi Shaw grab the opportunity with both hands. Shubman is a very exciting talent and I saw him bat in the nets and I was like wow I was not even 10 percent of that when I was 19,” Kohli had said earlier this week.Gill had said his heart had started beating faster when he received the news of his maiden India call-up earlier this month.”It was late in the night.
