BVI implements new application process of permits

first_imgThe government of the British Virgin Islands is in the process of testing a new online application process for entry permits.Premier Dr. Orlando Smith, in a recent announcement said while the online platform is being created, employers are now able to send work permit applications directly to immigration.“As of Monday, February 19, any company can have their work permits processed for the employees by having all the documents for the employees sent from the company directly to the Immigration Department. This would also apply for the owners or managers of companies,” Smith said.“We expect this to be up and running within the next few weeks… This will add to the efficiency of the application process at the Immigration Department,” he said.Meanwhile, the Premier said organizations or persons responsible for any number of volunteers are now required to submit volunteer applications to the facility based in the capital of Road Town.Persons must write to the Chief Immigration Officer indicating the name of the parent organization, when persons are expected to arrive in the territory, and how long they plan to stay, the Premier said.“This request will then be facilitated by the Immigration Department,” he added. The changes are being rolled out to improve the Immigration process which has been described as chronically cumbersome.According to Immigration officials, persons comprising mostly expatriate workers have been flocking the department in crowds since the hurricanes. These persons are forced to stand in extremely long lines to get their Immigration documents processed. The problem is compounded by the influx of persons entering the territory to assist with recovery.last_img read more

AAA: Gas prices drop again, but higher prices are coming

first_imgGas prices have steadily declined during the past couple of weeks, but that downward trend is likely coming to an end. Refineries are entering their seasonal maintenance period, which can place significant upward pressure on prices at the pump. Historically, maintenance season has caused gas prices to jump 15-75 cents from February to June. Last year, pump prices only rose 15 cents during that time, because oil prices struggled to maintain strength. When gasoline jumped 60-70 cents in 2015 and ’16, oil had risen $15-$20 per barrel. “Energy prices are rising again, which should signal the end for the steady slump at the pump,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Wholesale gasoline prices jumped last week, amid reports that refinery activity along the gulf coast is slowing down. This will make it more expensive for retailers to purchase gasoline, and that added expense will eventually be passed along to the consumer. Based on movements in the market last week, the short-term increase could amount to only a few cents, but motorists should expect a minimum total increase of 20-30 cents this spring.”Florida gas prices drop 16 cents in 17 daysGas prices for the month of February are their highest in four years. Florida gas prices declined during the past 17 consecutive days, for a total discount of 16 cents. The state average of $2.52 is 5 cents less than a week ago and 3 cents less than last month. However, motorists are paying 24 cents per gallon more than this time last year – the difference of $4 for an average-sized tank of gasoline. The most expensive gas price averages in Florida are in West Palm Beach-Boca Raton ($2.66), Sebastian-Vero Beach ($2.64), and Naples ($2.63).The least expensive gas price averages in Florida are in Jacksonville ($2.43), Punta Gorda ($2.45), and Orlando ($2.47).last_img read more

Cruise Ships Allowed To Disembark at Broward County’s Port

first_imgSOUTH FLORIDA – The eyes of the world have been fixed on South Florida recently, as elected officials, government administrators, health care professionals, law enforcement and a myriad of other organizations in Broward County have been engaged in an unprecedented fight against COVID-19 – a fight that is requiring tough choices and difficult decisions. For most of the day Thursday, two Holland America Line cruise ships carrying approximately 1,250 passengers and 1,200 crew lay off the coast of South Florida, awaiting clearance to dock at Broward County’s Port Everglades. Because some of the passengers have tested positive for COVID-19, and four passengers have passed away, the ships have been denied entry at other ports along their route to the U.S.The Zaandam and the Rotterdam Cruise Ships were given permission to dock at Port Everglades late Thursday afternoon, after having been at sea for nearly a month.“Residents have been understandably concerned about potential impacts in our community,” said Broward County Mayor Dale V.C. Holness. “This is a humanitarian situation, and the County Commission’s top priority is protecting our 1.9 million residents while providing a contained disembarkation option for people on board who need to get safely home.”South Florida is the epi-center of Florida’s COVID-19 crisis, with more positive cases and deaths from the coronavirus than the rest of Florida combined.Holland America Line’s parent company, Carnival Corporation, submitted a revised plan that first had to meet the stringent requirements of Broward’s Unified Command, which consists of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Florida Health Department in Broward County, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Broward Sheriff’s Office Departments of Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue, Port Everglades Pilots Association, Broward County’s Port Everglades Department and Broward County Administration.Highlights of the final, approved plan include:Nearly all of the guests onboard are deemed well and fit for travel per guidelines from CDC and will transfer from the ship, wearing masks, in sanitized, chartered coaches with limited person-to-person contact. On Friday and Saturday, they will be taken in groups directly to the tarmac at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, to board charter flights home. They have been self-isolated on board the ship since March 22 and will be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival.Approximately two dozen guests onboard have mild illness and the plans calls for these guests to continue to isolate on board until they are recovered. Disembarkation for these individuals will not occur until they meet CDC guidelines for being fit to travel.Approximately 15 individuals need immediate critical care shoreside, and a local health system partner here in Broward has agreed to accept them for treatment, with a transfer procedure that protects the patient, the health care workers and the community.Among the passengers are 311 American citizens, including Floridians. Passengers who are residents of Florida will be provided private transportation to their homes.“The passengers that are sick want medical attention, as any of us would,” said Mayor Holness. “The ones that are well simply want to go home. They have families and lives they want desperately to return to. We can safely help them, and we should.”last_img read more

Non-violent Undocumented Immigrants in South Florida Detention Centers To Be Released

first_imgA federal judge has ordered authorities to release more than 1,200 undocumented immigrants from three South Florida detention centers to prevent a wider spread of the coronavirus. U.S. District Court Judge Marcia Cooke said the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement must submit a report Sunday with steps to bring down the centers population from 1,400 to about 350. So far, ICE says nine detainees at the Krome Detention Center in Miami have tested positive. At least eight staff members have been infected. The three centers are Krome Detention Center in Miami, Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach and the Glades County facility in Moore Haven. Cooke’s ruling, which was made on Thursday, comes after several protests were held outside of the detention centers in South Florida. Family members and friends of the prisoners said it was unfair to keep those arrested for misdemeanors in prison when they were being exposed to COVID-19. Cooke also slammed the federal immigration agency for not providing detainees ‘masks, soaps and other cleaning supplies’ and for failing to promote social distancing at the three jails. In an Op-Ed to Caribbean National Weekly, Miami-Dade State Attorney, Melba Peason also called for the release of nonviolent offenders from state jails, as well as a moratorium on seeking cash bail for nonviolent offenders to slow the spread of COVID-19.last_img read more

Sporting Index celebrates 25th birthday

first_img Share Share HBLB ups prize money commitment by 50% July 31, 2020 Kenneth Alexander: Industry’s regulatory future is in-play as live sport resumes June 15, 2020 StumbleUpon UK greyhound racing fast-tracks unlimited races June 9, 2020 Related Articles Submit Spread-betting firm Sporting Index is today celebrating its 25th year in business, having traded markets since being founded in April 1992.Since its historic first bet, a buy of Conservative seats in the 1992 General Election, Sporting Index has given punters 25 years of market spreads and ‘industry firsts’. Which include being the original two-way market, the first to offer cash out features, and unique markets that aren’t found anywhere else – and it continues to set trends that others follow to this day.In 2001, Sporting Index was the first bookmaker to launch an online, fully interactive sports spread betting service, and in 2003, unveiled ‘Bet on the Move’ – the UK’s first ever mobile betting application. The operator can further claim to have invented ‘backing and laying’ before being taken up by online betting exchanges.Sporting Index has also suffered its fair share of big losses over the years. In 1994, Brian Lara’s 375* against England cost Sporting Index dear – each of his boundaries cost the firm £1,500. More recently, Barcelona’s thrilling comeback over PSG last month also saw the traders come out second best, with the final total goal minutes of 424 well above the opening prediction of 202.One of Sporting Index’s most well-known features has been its innovative and unique markets – some have raised a smile, some an eyebrow, but most have raised the bar. One of the most fondly remembered markets was ‘Jerry Springer’ during England’s 5-1 victory over Germany in 2001, which predicted the number of German headers during the match.Commenting on reaching the 25-year business operations milestone, Simon Trim, CEO of Sporting Index, said: “Sporting Index has enjoyed an incredibly successful 25 years where we’ve constantly pushed the boundaries of sports betting.“The industry landscape is vastly different today than in 1992, and we feel we’ve helped to lead the way in much of the major innovations that have taken place.“A big “Thank You” must go to all of our employees and customers who have been part of the journey, and here’s to the next successful 25 years.”last_img read more
