Croatia beat Spain 2-1 to top Euro 2016 Group D

first_imgBordeaux, France | AFP |Croatia beat Spain 2-1 to top Euro 2016 Group D N. Ireland qualify for Euro 2016 last 16, Italy play Spain in next roundTurkey win to stay in contention Del Bosque responded by withdrawing front two Nolito and Morata for the more physical presence of Bruno Soriano and Aritz Aduriz.Spain were then handed a great chance to retake the lead when referee Bjorn Kuipers adjudged Silva had been pushed by Sime Vrsaljko inside the area.Modric appeared to send on a message to Subasic when he saw his Real Madrid teammate Ramos step up to take the spot-kick.And Subasic got lucky as his penalty save was allowed to stand despite the fact he had encroached well before Ramos took aim.Croatia took full advantage to blow the tournament wide open as Perisic lashed home to round off a clinical counter-attack leaving Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England all on the bottom-half of the last-16 draw. Turkey stun Czech Republic to revive Euro hopesBurak Yilmaz and Ozan Tufan scored a goal in each half as Turkey beat Czech Republic 2-0 to keep alive slim hopes of reaching the Euro 2016 last 16 on Tuesday. The defeat eliminated Czech Republic, who had already suffered at Turkish hands at a past Euro finals.Turkey lost their first two Group D matches and were punished for their unruly fans. And there were more wild scenes in the stands as Turkey stole the match.Eighteen year-old Emre Mor, who has just been signed by Borussia Dortmund, burst down the right after 10 minutes, saw Yilmaz in the middle and provided a perfect ball for the Beijing Guoan player to fire the ball into the corner. In a closely fought contest that was Turkey’s only entry into the Czech goal area in the first half hour.Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Babacan produced a series of brilliant saves to keep his side in the game. He also had some luck when Tomas Sivok’s header came off the crossbar. At the 2008 Euro finals, Turkey came from two goals down to beat the Czech Republic 3-2.And Czech veteran Jaroslav Plasil, who scored in that game, played a one-two with Borek Dockal and fired a 25-metre drive that was heading for the corner of the net before Babacan made a dramatic leap to push it wide. The Czech Republic pressed forward but Turkey struck a killer blow on 65 minutes.Selcuk Inan put across a free-kick that Mehmet Topal headed back and Tufan smashed a tight angle shot that powered past Petr Cech.“It’s of course a huge disappointment for everyone. We had it in our hands, unfortunately we failed. We started very well, they scored on the first attack and that was the breaking point,” Cech told Czech television.“If we played another four hours today, I think we would still not be able to score.”The three points ensured that Turkey could still reach the last 16, at least until the final round of group matches on Wednesday. They will need results to go their way in the Group E games between Italy and Irish Republic and Sweden-Belgium to pull off the miracle.Turkish fans threw flares on the pitch to put their country at risk of new UEFA sanctions. At least three flares landed on the pitch following the second goal. Turkey were punished after their fans set off flares in the stadium during their defeat by Spain last Friday. At the end of the first half there was trouble between Turkish fans and stadium stewards after a firecracker exploded in the Turkish section of the crowd and stewards move in to find the fan responsible.Share on: WhatsAppcenter_img Ivan Perisic struck a sensational winner three minutes from time as Croatia ended Spain’s 14-game unbeaten run at the European Championship to top Group D after a 2-1 victory in Bordeaux on Tuesday.Spain will now face Italy in the last 16 in Paris on Monday in a repeat of the 2012 final.Alvaro Morata’s early strike got Spain off to a flying start, but, despite the absence of key man Luka Modric through injury, Croatia battled back to equalise before half-time through Nikola Kalinic.Spain captain Sergio Ramos saw a penalty saved by Danijel Subasic 18 minutes from time. And that miss proved vital when Perisic snuck the ball home at David de Gea’s near post.Croatia meet one of the best third-placed sides in Lens on Saturday. The manner of back-to-back victories over the Czech Republic and Turkey had seen Spain installed as bookies’ favourites to win an unprecedented third successive European Championship.Morata’s return to European champions Real Madrid from Juventus had been confirmed earlier on Tuesday. And he moved level with club teammate Gareth Bale on three goals in the fight for the golden boot by finishing off a slick Spanish move after seven minutes.David Silva’s cute reverse pass picked out Cesc Fabregas’s run and the Chelsea midfielder’s cross was tapped into an empty net by Morata.Spain looked rarely troubled at the back in their opening two games, but were given plenty of problems by Croatia despite the absence of star midfielder Modric.Kalinic stung the palms of David de Gea before forcing an error from the Manchester United ‘keeper as he dallied. The loose ball fell to Ivan Rakitic and his brilliant chipped effort floated over Barcelona teammate Gerard Pique on the line before coming back off both the crossbar and post.Morata had a great chance to double Spain’s lead when he failed to control Fabregas’s fine through ball with just Subasic to beat. However, Vicente Del Bosque’s men were pegged back right on half-time when Perisic’s cross from the left was delightfully flicked home by Kalinic. It was the first time Spain had conceded in 11 competitive games stretching back to October 2014 and first time they had conceded in the Euros for a record 733 minutes. The goal seemed to knock Spain out of their stride as Croatia pushed them onto the back foot at the start of the second period.De Gea saved from Tin Jedvaj to atone for his own error in flapping at a cross before Marko Pjaca sent an acrobatic effort just wide from the rebound.Pjaca also had claims for a penalty waved away as Croatia threatened the goal that would have taken them top of the group.last_img read more

Developers Keep Hating On Microsoft’s Revamped MSDN

first_img3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now If you are assuming that the majority of people visiting the site are newbie, non-MS tech developers I guess you hit your target….MS is making it more and more difficult for people like me, who have been using and developing for MS platforms for almost 20 years, to keep supporting you guys when you continually make decisions based on what your PR people are telling you are good things.Directly related to this marketing critique is the suggestion that Microsoft’s new MSDN is actually designed to push people to write Windows Store apps. At least as measured by the comments to Harry’s blog, this isn’t an option many Microsoft developers actually want. Among the criticisms, one from Denny is particularly apt:[S]o it looks like all the stuff on windows / pc / .net leads to what amounts to advertising for the new app store and windows 8. not very helpful if you are still developing for windows CE and Server 2003-2008 and all the other “old” stuff.Microsoft RespondsThe criticism, some of it “brutal” by Harry’s admission, didn’t fall on deaf ears. In reply, Harry took the lead on answering the most concentrated critiques. To those furious that MSDN seems to have become a sleight of hand for moving people to Windows Store, rather than technical content, Harry responds that “Yep. We messed that up.” However, his answer essentially sidesteps the core of the question, and instead promises more technical content, and not less of a skew toward breeding Windows Store devotees. And what about those complaining that MSDN had become a marketing site? According to Harry, much of that was intentional: “Certainly adding a little bit of marketing feel in the sense of representing the “why” [developer with Microsoft technologies] component was intentional.” As he goes on to note, however, developers that “already know ‘why’…don’t [need it] shove[d] it in [their] face and instead [want to] get to the ‘how’ content as quickly and easily as possible.”He then promises further refinements.Catering To A Very Demanding AudienceIt’s hard to read the comments to Harry’s post without feeling empathy. Microsoft has long been a favorite with developers (they even have a CEO who dances and sings to developers), but in the past few years the company has fallen behind in mobile and web, zigging on proprietary approaches while developers have zagged with open source. The new MSDN appears to fall short with existing Microsoft developers, and may also be too light to appeal to new developers that want code, not marketing fluff. Fortunately for Microsoft, it has a built-in fan base that wants it to succeed. Unfortunately for the company, however, its new MSDN appears to have disregarded these very developers upon which it must rely. Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Matt Asay Tags:#developers#Microsoft#MSDN#Open Source#Windows#Windows Store As he explains it, that home page “atrophied” over the years and has “become mostly a routing layer for the variety of platform dev centers around the company,” making it difficult for newbies to find the right content. The new MSDN, then, is designed to provide “a single point of entry for all developers,” be they iOS developers or loyal Windows developers. Two weeks into the changes, Microsoft’s developer community doesn’t seem to like the “new and improved” MSDN very much.More Changes, Less GoodAlmost immediately, developers started to rail against the changes in the comments section to Harry’s blog post. While the criticism varies wildly, two primary complaints stand out: Microsoft has essentially turned a developer site into a marketing brochureThe new MSDN tries to force developers into working with Windows Store, an option many don’t seem to want to take.Among those ripping into Microsoft for turning MSDN into a marketing infomercial, here are just a few among many:Robert McLaws:The redesign is good, but I’m sorry the content is terrible. This is not a marketing site, it’s a *developer* site. You guys have marketing sites for this stuff already, it needs to be left off of here. You should be showcasing developer content, not sales pitches and marketing team platitudes.Jim Perry:[T]he site is now almost completely useless. You’ve done nothing but place an unnecessary roadblock, the Metro style interface, between developers and the information they come to the site to find. Metro is for consumers, not developers. We don’t need, nor usually want, fluff…center_img IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… Related Posts Microsoft recently revamped its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) site to give its developer community a more consistent cross-platform experience. Unfortunately, in an attempt to give developers a “more modern place to go as a central landing page to find out everything you want to know about developing for Microsoft,” the company may have inadvertently created a marketing-oriented site for Windows Store that developers hate.Giving Newbies A Better Place To StartBrian Harry, a Microsoft Technical Fellow working as the Product Unit Manager for Team Foundation Server, announced the changes in late July. According to Harry, while as much as 70% of visitors to MSDN discover its content through search, others rely on the home page to steer them toward relevant content.last_img read more

To Insure or Not to Insure?

first_imgBy Leigh Guth, N.C. Cooperative Extension AgentTo Insure or Not to Insure? That is the question often asked when we buy a new phone, computer or any gadget these days.  Usually it is at the checkout counter with little time to ponder the pros and cons.  There are 5 people in line behind you, or you have a 7-year old with you.  It doesn’t sound expensive, and you would hate to have this new coveted gadget broken by said 7-year old, so, you sign on the dotted line.Insurance is a financial tool to guarantee against risk of loss or harm.  As a consumer, you have five choices when it comes to loss or harm.Cross your fingers and hope for the best.Avoid loss by avoiding risky behaviors or dangerous locations.  Examples would be not taking your electronics to the swimming pool, not smoking, or giving up sky diving.Reduce your chance of loss by taking certain actions like wearing safety gear, keeping your computer in a case, or using a smoke detector at home.Accept risk knowing that you can afford to pay for the loss. The most common example is an insurance deductible.  You agree to pay the $500 deductible since you can afford that amount, and it will lower your annual insurance cost.Transfer the risk by purchasing insurance.Keep in mind the large-loss principle when choosing what to insure.  Purchase insurance with the extent of the loss in mind and not the likelihood of loss. For example, if you have a habit of losing or damaging cell phones then the potential of harm or loss may be high for subsequent phones.  However, the cost to replace a phone is $200.  This is not a large loss so it’s better not to purchase insurance but instead reduce your risk or accept the risk.   Take the $7 monthly insurance fee and put it into an emergency fund to help pay for the phone if it is lost or damaged.Let’s apply this concept to disability insurance.  The likelihood that you will have an illness or injury that keeps you from working may be low.  However, if individuals depend on you for income or for caregiving, what would happen to them if you were no longer able to function in that capacity? How much income would they need to replace your lost wages?  Replacing just $1,200 a month for 18 years would amount to $259,200 in lost income.  This is a substantial amount and justifies insurance based on the large-loss principle.Make sure that you do not purchase insurance that duplicates other coverage. For example, do not purchase insurance when renting a car.  Check with your current auto insurance; you are probably already covered or can add a rider for less than the policy at the rental counter.Based on the concepts of large-loss and non-duplication, most people need health/medical; disability; life; property, and auto.Resources:eXtension – Meeting Your Insurance Needslast_img read more
