GOLF NEWS: OTWAY HOST VERY SUCCESSFUL PRESIDENT’S DAY LAST WEEKEND

first_imgOtway Golf News:Congratulations to club President Dessie Crerand on a very successful Presidents day last Saturday at Otway. While the weather has been typically Irish so far this year. Unpredictable, Dessie’s guests and club members were blessed with summer temperatures and ideal playing conditions. On the day, the best was kept till last, as Damian Gallagher took to the course as last of the participants, but finished first on the podium to claim Dessie’s Presidents prize with 43 pts. In second place on 41 was Peter Friel, pipping brother Philip on break of tie into third. Paul Murray won the gross prize, while the nines went to Shaun Sweeney and Sam Anderson. Sean Duffy hit the longest drive, and nearest the pin was Martin O’Reilly. The ladies 9 hole competition was won by Orla Gallagher with Mary Hasson coming a close second. Well done to Dessie and his partner Joan for organising a very enjoyable day of golf, a tasty bite to eat after battle, and a night of entertainment into the wee hours. The spirit of competition and entertainment continues this Saturday 29th when lady captain Iris Condron hosts her big day, with the gents invited to participate in a nine hole competition at 5pm, and the now-famous barbeque on completion. Best of luck to Iris and all the ladies and gents taking part on the day. India can win the World Cup: Kapil Dev

first_imgIndia’s only World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev on Saturday said with a combination of experience and youth and a little bit of luck, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men could win the 2011 quadrennial event to be hosted jointly by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”The present Indian team has good track record. The combination of experienced and young players would help the team to win the World Cup,” the legendary all-rounder, who led India to its only world title way back in 1983, said during a promotional event in Jamshedpur. When apprised that none of the World Cup organising country could win the trophy at home ground till date, Kapil said perhaps, India will break the jinx this time.”No team can win the World Cup depending on a particular player.
